Anarchist Age Weekly Review 12th Aug. Number 312 11th - 17th August, 1998 IN A TIME OF UNIVERSAL DECEIT - TELLING THE TRUTH IS A REVOLUTIONARY ACT - GEORGE ORWELL SHAFTED If the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Stone and the Prime Minister, the battlers friend, Johnny Howard, had their way the Northern Territory will be a state on the hundredth anniversary of Federation on the 1st January 2001. What a joke, at the very time we should be deconstructing the state apparatus and replacing it with regional networks, these clowns want us to rejoice because the Northern Territory may become a state. No wonder Stone was grinning from ear to ear. As far as he is concerned this is the perfect opportunity to put those pesky blacks back in their place. Just imagine it, all the gains that were made when the Australian people gave the Commonwealth power to pass legislation to assist indigenous people in the 1967 referendum, are now up for grabs. If the Northern Territory succeeds in its push to become a state, the big losers will be the state's indigenous people. Over twenty five percent of the population will be disenfranchised if indigenous affairs are handed over to the Northern Territory government. Uluru and Kakadu's management will pass into the hands of the new state government. Leasehold land will become freehold land and most importantly of all, those land rights victory's that have been won over the last thirty years will be negated by the stroke of a pen. Those people who participate in the Northern Territory referendum and vote for statehood will be voting to create an entity that will strip more and more rights from this country's indigenous people. Stone and his pathetic bunch of supporters are keen, very keen to place a constitution before the Northern Territory people that will strip indigenous and non-indigenous Australians of the few rights they now enjoy. If you decide to participate in the referendum, irrespective of whether you vote Yes or No, make sure you vote No to Stone's pathetic attempts to draw up a constitution for the proposed new state. TEARS OF BLOOD!! I feel for those poor fools who continue to sink in good money after bad trying to make a killing from Crown Casino. Just imagine the whole tragic scene. Just twelve months ago our intrepid investors were riding high, Crown Casino shares were selling for $2.62, the 2.1 billion dollar monstrosity down by the Yarra was pulling in the money and was able to service the mother of all debts. Just twelve months down the track, the dream has turned into a nightmare. Crown Casino shares are now trading at 41 cents (that's right 41 cents) and are still falling. The cheap and shiny bodgie built monstrosity down by the Yarra, the apple of Kennett's eye is now valued at a little over 400 million dollars. Tragically for our little mates, they still need to service their 2.1 billion dollar debt. The goose that laid the golden egg is now dead, the golden egg like the rest of Crown Casino is only coated with gold foil. The punters aren't flocking to the gaming tables, and Crown Casino is being forced to shed staff at the same rate trees shed their leaves in autumn. Kennett's and Ron Walker's jewel has been found to be a dud. The state governments tax take is beginning to plunge as the gamblers desert the sinking ship. Crown Casino is for all intentional purposes dismembered, dead and buried. It may splutter on for a few more years, but ultimately this folly by the Yarra will stand as a monument to the idiots who believed that the state could buy its way out of debt by gambling. Any gambler worth their salt knows that if you want to make a buck gambling you never gamble with other people's money. DECEPTION? The South Australian government is trying very hard to privatise the electricity generation and distribution network in South Australia. After faithfully promising (cross my heart I hope to die), the South Australian electorate that they would not privatise the electricity network, they are now trying to flog off the whole lot, lock, stock and barrel to the highest (some say the lowest) bidder. I assume that the Olsen Liberal government in South Australia didn't bother to tell the South Australian electors a year ago that their promise was ‡ la John Howard not a core promise. Well the deception has taken a new turn in the past few days. A Mr Nigel Winton has been placing adds in Adelaide newspapers on behalf of disgruntled South Australians imploring Mr Wran the Labor Opposition leader to change his mind and support the privatisation of the electricity supply for the good of the good South Australian burghers. What our mate Nigel has conveniently forgotten to tell South Australians is that he is standing as a candidate for the presidency of the South Australian Liberal Party and that the Adelaide law firm he is working for is advising the Olsen Liberal government on the best way to privatise the states electricity supply. No wonder the peoples' friend John Olsen, the man who almost lost the non-loseable election has disclaimed all knowledge of Nigel's little scheme. I wonder who bankrolled those full page advertisements in Adelaide's newspapers. Full page adds don't come cheap, did the Olsen Liberal government earmark a few taxpayers dollars to pay for this so called spontaneous expression of peoples' desire to sell the electricity supply to the private sector. If you believe that John Olsen and the South Australian Liberal Party had no knowledge of Nigel's tawdry little scheme, it's possible you're the type of person who believes that the earth is flat, that the second coming is around the corner and that the One Notion Party is not a racist party. Either way it's blatantly obvious to anyone with a synapsing neurone that the Olsen government's plans, reek of deception. ONE BORN EVERY MINUTE It's hard to believe that the Federal Coalition government is about to use over fifty million dollars of taxpayers funds to sell their pre-electoral message. Johnny Howard and his crew of intellectually challenged mates intends to use over fifty million dollars of taxpayers funds over the next few months to sell their electoral message. Anybody who believes that the Federal Coalition's plans have nothing to do with the upcoming Federal election is in urgent need of medications to treat their visual and auditory hallucinations. They must either be very desperate, or believe that the electorate is very stupid if they believe that anybody believes their mantra, that their campaigns are education campaigns, not electoral campaigns. When you think about the matter, it's obvious to one and all that the government's tax plan (their phrase, not my phrase), is the central plank of their election strategy. Why should you and I be expected to bankroll their election campaign? We're not talking about an advertising campaign to acquaint people with changes in legislation or general education programs about pressing community health problems. We're talking about the Coalition using taxpayers funds to fund their cynical re-election campaign, nothing more, nothing less. Keating's and Hawke's use of taxpayers funds to pay for Labor Party re-election campaigns pales into insignificance with the Liberal/National Parties attempts to get the taxpayer to bankroll their tax re-election campaign. Johnny Howard's attempts to shake down the Australian taxpayer for the money to pay for his re-election campaign, is a prime example of the cynical opportunism that is such a prominent feature of the current Liberal/National Party Federal government. Howard's current efforts are on a par with the notorious statement he made after his election victory in 1996 that he was only going to keep "core" promises. What he and his cronies forgot to tell the Australian people during the Federal election campaign in 1996 was that they had embarked on the cynical exercise of dividing promises into "core" and "non-core" promises. Anybody who is willing to use such tactics obviously has a serious question mark hanging over their credibility. HI HO HI HO OFF TO WRACK AND RUIN WE GO!! I don't want to be compared to chicken little but I've got to agree with chicken little - the sky is falling down. Everywhere you turn the indications are that we are in for some torrid, very torrid times. The last pin, the Japanese economy is about to turn over and die. It now looks like the Japanese stock market is going to go down the gurgler. When the Japanese stock market collapses, it's highly likely that the unparalleled bull run on the New York Exchange will grind to a halt. As the Yen struggles to keep up with the fortunes of the United States dollar, more and more companies face bankruptcy and more and more workers will loose their jobs. As the Japanese Yen enters potential free fall territory, the Australian dollar is once again below the 60 cent mark. As the hedging funds target the Japanese economy, the chances are the Australia economy will be subjected to sustained attacks by all and sundry. The situation is desperate, much more desperate than most people are willing to admit. Global capitals bull run is about to come to an end. When the Japanese economy collapses and collapse it will, the resultant after shocks will damage economies across the globe. We are standing on the cusp of one of the most devastating economic collapses of the last 100 years. The globalisation and privatisation agenda has been tried and found to be wanting. The resultant economic dislocation provides the perfect background for egalitarian social change. Whether this occurs or not will ultimately depend on whether we are able to seize this moment by presenting viable and logical alternatives to the mess the world and Australia find itself in, in the next twelve months. ANARCHIST QUESTION AND ANSWER Q Why do anarchists abhor religious fundamentalists? A. If there is one thing anarchists detest, it's religious fundamentalists. Anarchists hold all religious fundamentalists with the same contempt and loathing. Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists and any other variety of fundamentalism is viewed with horror by anarchists. Anarchism is essentially a pluralistic ideology. Live and let live is the motto that anarchists follow. Fundamentalist thought is the very anthesis of anarchist thought. Fundamentalists will use every means at their disposal to improve their view of the world on other people. In their eyes there is only one way of doing things - their way. If you disagree and want to live your own life in your own way, they will neutralise you. As far as they are concerned life is very simple, deadly simple, they are right everybody else is wrong. As God is on their side they can justify any act or actions. They are keen to capture the state apparatus so they can impose their will on everybody who doesn't agree with their world view. Those who oppose them are forced into exile, imprisoned or executed. How can they possibly be wrong, God is on their side. In the name of their God they will commit any atrocity to impose their will on disbelievers. None of this voluntary bullshit for them. They have the answers, they have a particular lifestyle, you join them or you're persecuted. This history of religious fundamentalism is a history of intolerance, bigotry, cruelty and violence. As far as anarchists are concerned religious fundamentalists deserve each other. Religious fundamentalists are dangerous and need to be confronted at every opportunity. They deny people choice, remove free will and will use any and every means at their disposal to impose their diseased ideas on an unwilling community. Anarchists and religious fundamentalists stand at opposite ideological poles. They have little if anything in common and will continue to do battle until one or other ideology is tipped into the dustbin of history. ACTION BOX - SO YOU WANT TO BE A SHOCK JOCK!! Community and mainstream radio is being used by more and more anarchists to put forward their ideas. In a few countries Anarchists run 24 hour, 7 day a week radio stations. In most situations especially in Australia, Anarchists are involved with community radio stations. Some are involved in general programs, a few have specific Anarchists programs. The comments in this article are specifically directed at Anarchist broadcasters who have their own programs on community radio. Radio is an immediate medium, it's a very powerful medium. It's possible over time to build up a regular listener base. The Anarchist Media Institute/Libertarian Workers for a Self-Managed Society have been involved with community radio in Melbourne for over twenty years. A few important points we've learnt over the years (sometimes very painfully and slowly). 1) Never (or nearly never) read material on radio. Radio is a natural medium, people turn off very quickly if you read material. 2) If you have an Anarchist program, keep it Anarchist. Many voices are heard on community radio, people listen to your program for the ideas not the gimmicks or music. 3) When you talk, look at the microphone, don't keep turning your head to look at who you are speaking to. 4) Silence is deadly on radio, learn to think on your feet. If the worst comes to the worst have a cart ready to fill any dead space. 5) Don't be frightened of making technical mistakes on air, they happen, you'll get better with time. 6) Tape your program, for legal reasons and for teaching purposes, listen to yourself speak. With time you'll be able to remove those annoying fumbles we're all prone to. 7) PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE - It doesn't matter how smart you are (or you think you are), if you don't prepare, you not only let yourself down but you let your listeners down. 8) When you talk on the microphone, talk as if you're in your own lounge room, the more relaxed you are the easier it is to listen to you. 9) Try to break down complex ideas into simpler ideas, don't be frightened to put forward specific anarchist viewpoints. If you don't, nobody else will. 10) Remember it doesn't matter how humorous or smart you are, the main purpose of the show is present ideas not create stars. 11) Try to have guests on. If you have a guest on, negotiate how many minutes the interview will last, try to stick to it. If you don't, the rest of the program will suffer. 12) Make sure you can give out a contact telephone number, email or postal address so that people who are interested in what you have to say can easily contact you. Radio broadcasting can be a great deal of personal fun, it is an exciting medium to master and if you stick with it you can make a valuable contribution to the anarchist movement and raise your own self esteem. AUSTRALIAN ANARCHIST HISTORY - I.W.W. TWELVE CHARGED WITH TREASON -FELONY When the I.W.W. twelve were originally arrested in Sydney on the eve of the first conscription referendum in 1916 they were charged with the crime treason-felony. A crime which carried the death sentence. Fritz Georgie an escaped German internee, revolutionary and an associate of the Sydney branch of the I.W.W. loomed large in their plans to charge the twelve with the treason-felony charges. Fritz Georgie had been rounded up as part of the governments attempts to intern Germans during the war. He was held in Sing Sing the maximum security section of the Holdsworthy internment camp. On the night of Thursday the 20th of July he and six other internees tunnelled forty feet and made their way out of the maximum security section. Six of the internees were captured the next day, Fritz Georgie re-established his contacts with the Sydney I.W.W. They provided him with hiding places and arranged for the distinctive tattoos on his forearms to be burnt with silver nitrate (a very, very painful procedure). He was then taken to Broken Hill by the I.W.W. and worked in the mines under an assumed name. He was arrested on the 23rd of October 1916 and charged with escaping from Holdsworthy just five days before the conscription referendum. In an attempt to build up their treason-felony case against the I.W.W. twelve, the government offered Fritz Georgie a pardon if he co-operated with them and gave them information which linked the I.W.W. with the German government. Although Fritz was physically intimidated and although he faced a long jail sentence for escaping from the Holdsworthy internment camp, he refused to co-operate with the Crown. As a consequence of his principled and brave stand the government had no option but to amend the treason-felony charges against the I.W.W. twelve to the lesser charges, "conspiracy to defeat the ends of justice and to commit arson and seditious conspiracy". Fritz Georgie was found guilty of breaking out of Holdsworthy internment camp and was sent to Goldburn jail, for refusing to co-operate in the Governments case against the I.W.W. twelve. BOOK REVIEW - DESIGNS FOR ANARCHIST POSTAGE STAMPS WITH SIXTEEN PORTRAITS BY CLIFFORD HARPER Foreword by Colin Word, Rebel Press London 1997, ISBN 0946061149 I'm sure, more than sure, that Clifford Harper's and Colin Word's heart were in the right place when they collaborated to produce Designs for Anarchist Postage Stamps, but I really can't take to this book. Maybe I've been spoilt by the plethora of brightly coloured stamps that I collected as a child, but I just can't get into Designs for Anarchist Postage Stamps. Possibly the drab olive green cover put me off this little book, possibly the all too predictable portraits of 16 anarchist identities has soured my opinion. All in all I find this book drab and predictable. I enjoyed reading Clifford Harpers Afterward about the important role the Post Office played in his families and his life. I gleaned a few interesting bits of information from Colin Words foreword, but the stamps left me cold, very cold. The designs were predictable, the subject matter repetitive. Clifford Harpers line drawings were up to his usual excellent standard, but the way they are presented as stamps is very, very disappointing. Looking at the stamp sheets I'm reminded of the boring predictable Her Royal Highness stamps that were all the rage in Britain and the Colonies in the 1950's and 1960's. Unfortunately Clifford Harpers fine detail is lost in the drab olive green presentation. All in all this book is a wonderful idea that has been castrated through poor design and presentation. BOOK REVIEW - CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD - AN UNCOMMON DIALOGUE Don't get me wrong, please don't let the title of the book mislead you, but this particular book which a friend lent me to look at is definitely not about religion (well not in the mainstream orthodox sense). Many anarchists tend to be freethinkers "Neither God nor Master", was the traditional anarchist slogan and reading through this particular book there are many issues and themes both from personal and worldwide perspectives that perhaps many anarchists and freethinkers could agree on. The writer speaks about the phenomenon of "God" not from the traditional Judeo/Christian/Islamic sense as some angry, vindictive, authoritarian figure. Rather he touches on a more universal mystical theme that of a "Cosmic Consciousness" or "Great All" sense and about the relative nature of what most people defines as "Good vs Evil". Other aspects such as the industrial-military complex (it's interest in maintaining the status quo), traditional religions and religious fundamentalism (what they tell you), violence (can there ever be a justifiable reason for killing anything?), and nation states (how the state would have you believe that killing to complete a purely political agenda is perfectly defensible and in fact how it needs the individual to take its word on this in order to exist as an entity of power). The author very cleverly interweaves these issues and themes in this "dialogue" which I'm sure many open-minded and inquisitive individuals would find challenging and stimulating. The authors name is Neale Donald Walsch, and the publishers are Hodder & Stoughton. It is a fairly recent book and available at most book stores in town, such as Readings, McGills and Dymocks. Doug Edmond (Libertarian Workers for a Self-Managed Society). PERSONAL OBSERVATION Just my luck, here I was sitting in a restaurant, first time in weeks, waiting to tuck into my miso soup, tempura, sushi and sashimi when a bombastic, boring, Bavarian buffoon wearing long leather pants sits down with his Yobbo Aussie business partner and their silent appendages at the table next to mine. Pursuing our live and let live philosophy, my partner and I silently suffer the verbal outpourings encapsulated in their atrophic frontal lobes for the next two hours. Their foghorn voices, battled with each other in an effort to join two words together in a logical sequence. We heard every trying pedestrian aspect of the Aussie Yobbos once in a life time European trip. We were subjected to the dreary details about how he and his partner, lived it up in Venice and you guessed it, how they lived on bread rolls in Budapest. His pathetic tale was the type of tale that makes you wonder why people bother to travel. His sexual appendage watched in admiration as he catalogues their list of monotonous exploits. His bombastic Bavarian friend, not to be outdone waxed lyrical about his trip to Hitler's birthplace in Austria. Finally their order arrived, peace at last I thought to myself, let's hope these two boring souls don't talk with their mouths full. I should have know better, as soon as their food arrived they started talk business. I assumed the interval between their order being taken and the arrival of their food was, in their eyes the time for mandatory business foreplay. The Aussie Yobbo started to wax lyrical about how there was money to be made from the privatisation of the Victorian water supply. Our Bavarian friend was interested in investing money in the project. As far as they were both concerned the privatisation of Victoria's water supply would help them fill up their personal coffers at the expense of the community. They gushed on and on about flow rates, catchment areas, pipe diameters and a thousand and one technical details about their grand plans. Their sexual appendages sat there smiling at each other, lost in their own thoughts. We ate our meal, paid our bill and began to wander off into the night. As we were stepping outside I noticed our Bavarian friend was trying to scratch his balls. That's when I realise there is some justice in this world, have you every tried to scratch your balls while wearing leather pants - a pretty hard thing to do at the best of times. STOP PRESS - NO TAX PACK!! There will be no analysis of John Howard's "winners package" in this issue of the Anarchist Age Weekly Review. You see, although you receive the weekly on Friday and the tax package will be released on Thursday, the Anarchist Age Weekly Review is typed and printed on Wednesday, hence no analysis. Many of you may say why bother waiting till the tax package is released? So much has been released, there will be nothing left to analyse on Thursday. What I've seen so far, doesn't make me think we're all going to be winners. Yes there will be changes, but these changes don't necessarily produce winners. As you know the devils in the detail, hence my reluctance to mouth off about the content of the package. I don't believe that John Howard and his merry band of virtual thieves really has any answers. Sure they have a plan, sure they are willing to implement that plan, but is that plan the plan that Australians need to resolve bracket creep and the grossly unfair nature of the taxation system. Either way don't expect any miracles, let alone a worthwhile equitable taxation system. John Howard's tax package is an illusion, it's the pinnacle of a parliamentary career that hasn't been blessed with innovative solutions now or in the past. To somehow believe that the leopard has changed its spots is something that is hard to imagine. About the only thing we can do is wait till Thursday and watch Johnny Howard deliver. A package, his pedestrian vision that has been designed to try to restore the electoral hopes of the Coalition government, not tackle problems that blight the lives of millions of Australians.
