Report From Cat@lyst BBS (Sydney, Australia) 18th October 1995. A few months ago we had a semi-washout open day, a few people turned up but not so much long term (despite good efforts by those involved). But we had our first "workshop" on Sunday a week ago (8th Oct) and that went pretty well. Was a basic introduction to email and using the net, like yours. I think there were 4 people there. We are starting our workshops as being just to people within the kore collective; there are sevral different kinds of workshops we want to run: intro to using cat@lyst: modems, loggin in, email, lynx, etc. intro to writing web pages intro to hardware intro to UNIX UNIX system administration depending on how popular they are. Once we've done a round of these workshops, we'll open them up and start advertising them slightly wider I guess. The room we have can only take about 6 people max, so they'll be small. One of the really great things about having cat@lyst accessible in a bookshop is that the technology becomes more human, I think. Instead of isolated people at the end of a modem; people can come in and mill about in a physical/human space. We have weekly meetings on Tuesday nights, which is a pretty heavy commitment for some of us, but it means that one week we have a general meeting, talkfest. The alternate week, we have a hands-on night, where people can come in and do stuff, and get help from others that turn up. At least that's the idea, often it turns into a bit of a talkfest anyway, but that's ok.
